The mountains used as a spillway for Attabad Lake have developed some fissures threatening the lives of thousands of people living in the area, a senior government official told a private TV channel here on Saturday. He said that the evacuation process that had started a day earlier came to a halt because of intermittent rains.
Hunza Assistant Commissioner Momin Jan told the TV channel that the experts had already warned of a major catastrophe that could result from the widening cracks in the mountains serving as the spillway for the lake water. According to the sources within the local administration, the rescue operation would resume with the improvement in weather.
Experts say that the pressure triggered by last year’s rise in water level is persistently increasing on one side of the mountains and the cracks have widened up to one-and-a-half mile.
