The Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Tuesday conferred Best University Teachers Award on 57 faculty members of public and private sector universities in recognition of their dedicated efforts to enhance the academic and research atmosphere in their respective institutions.
The award includes a certificate of merit and a cash prize of Rs 100,000. The performance of the teachers is evaluated on the basis of academic work performance (65 per cent), research work performance (24 per cent) and creative work (11 per cent). For the year 2010, 118 nominations were received from 60 public and private sector universities/degree awarding institutions.
After scrutiny and detailed evaluation, 57 teachers were selected. Senator Salim Saifullah Khan, chairman, Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan, was the chief guest at the award ceremony. Speaking on the occasion, he praised the HEC for launching the programme for recognising teachers. He said the HEC is a regulatory body and there should be no political interference in its affairs.
“I have already donated 1,000-kanal land for a cadet college in Lakki Marwat and am ready to donate another 2,000 kanals if the government agrees to establish a university,” he added. Dr Javaid R LEghari, HEC chairperson, said the faculty was the heart of any university and reputation of the institution depended on their performance. He added the universities were supposed to build communities and economies, but it was not possible without the active contribution of teachers.
He said the faculty development had been the foremost priority of HEC. “Our target is to produce good graduates, good researchers and good teachers with no compromise on quality,” he claimed.
