At least 53 suspected militants were killed and several others injured in four US drone attacks in North and South Waziristan agencies in the last 24 hours, signaling Washington’s resolve to step up assault on terror groups based in Pakistan’s Tribal Areas despite growing strains in relations with its key ally.
The attacks started on Monday night, when remotely piloted drones fired nine missiles into a militant compound in Gorwaik area of North Waziristan, killing 25 insurgents. Another strike, hours later in South Waziristan, killed five suspected militants, AFP reported. Then on Tuesday morning, a drone fired two missiles at another compound in Zara Maila village in Daray Nishtar of Shawal tehsil.
The missiles were fired as militants sitting in a vehicle were entering a house used by them as a hideout, killing 15 and injuring several others. Local officials said the militants were using the house of Abdul Rahman, from the Malik Shahi clan, as a hideout, adding that rescue activities were started late as several US drones were still hovering. The latest attack came late on Tuesday night when a US drone targeted a house and a vehicle in Datta Khel area of North Waziristan killing eight people.
