At least 15 people were burnt to death and five others seriously injured when a passenger bus went up in flames on the Islamabad Expressway in the outskirts of the federal capital on Tuesday. The vehicle caught fire after some inflammable material on board exploded, a bomb disposal expert said.
The incident occurred near Korang Town in the limits of Koral police station, as vehicle made its way to Kallar Syedan from Faizabad. Around 35 to 40 passengers were present in the vehicle when the incident occurred. Major (r) Tabassum, chief of the Bomb Disposal Squad, said the vehicle apparently caught fire after a low-level explosion.
Tabassum denied that the vehicle caught fire due to the explosion of the CNG cylinder. However, other officials said the fire had in fact been caused by the CNG cylinder’s explosion. An ICT administration official said buses and other vehicles were increasingly being installed with CNG cylinders that had led to several fires and explosion incidents.
