The recent step of the Punjab Government to distribute 20 thousand yellow cabs among the needy youth should be welcomed provided the provincial government ensures complete transparency and merit in it. There is another point which is of vital importance and this relates to saving the yellow cabs from hungry politicians who may take this scheme – primarily aimed at alleviating poverty through self-employment — as another opportunity to grab more votes.
I think that Chief Minister, Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has taken a very bold step by re-launching this scheme. However, unlike the previous adventure, he should be committed to ensure complete transparency.
It is hoped that his recent direction to the provincial administration to invite notables and the media men in the balloting would definitely help to impose public confidence on this scheme. Furthermore, this step of Punjab Government, to include only locally manufactured models, will also help the local car manufacturing industry.
I also appeal to the youth to look for more self-employment opportunities in their areas and should not wait for government jobs as no government can arrange jobs for all the people.
