A soldier was killed and three others were seriously injured in three powerful explosions at an army ammunition depot here in Sihala Monday morning.
At least three explosions occurred inside Pakistan Army’s arms depot located in the outskirts of the capital. “It was not a terrorist activity but an accidental blast. An explosive device exploded when a few people were handling it inside the army depot,” a senior security official said.
Another official said a small room was being used by the army personnel as a residential barrack. “Due to the explosions fire broke out and the roof of the barrack collapsed,” he added. The injured were shifted to a military hospital. The official said the blast had probably occurred due to short circuit.
Soon after the blast rescue teams, including fire fighters, reached the spot while contingents of police and security forces cordoned off the area. “The blast was so powerful that it was heard far and wide,” Iqbal, a resident of the area, said.
