India met further defiance from the West Indies in the third Test on Sunday, when Shivnarine Chanderpaul completed his 23rd Test hundred to lead the hosts to 294 for eight in their second innings at lunch.
Chanderpaul, playing in a West Indies’ record 133rd Test, was undefeated on 105, becoming the second century-maker in the innings on the last day of the inaugural Test at Windsor Park.
Kirk Edwards had stroked a maiden hundred of 110 on debut on Saturday. The Indians were further frustrated, when Fidel Edwards – no relation to Kirk – joined Chanderpaul and spent just over one and half hours at the crease, adding 38 for the ninth wicket, extending the home team’s lead to 151.
Chanderpaul reached his milestone from 265 balls, when he tucked a short, rising delivery from Ishant Sharma through backward square leg for two.
The visitors, as with Kirk Edwards on Saturday, had a chance to run Chanderpaul out on 99.
The veteran left-hander was quick enough to regain his ground after he turned a delivery from off-spinner Harbhajan Singh to forward short leg fielder Abhinav Mukund, whose under-armed throw missed the stumps.
