Fear and panic spread at the Civil Hospital Mirpurkhas (CHM) when a dozen men carrying weapons opened fire at a medical store in the premises of the hospital late Friday night. The medical store, which was constructed on the orders of Mirpurkhas Health Executive District Officer (EDO) Shafqat Hussain Daheri, was being demolished under Daheri and CHM Civil Surgeon Dr Asghar Arain’s supervision when around a dozen armed men on motorcycles arrived on the scene and resorted to heavy firing. As a result, the emergency ward’s staff, the paramedical staff and the police constables fled the hospital to save their lives, leaving behind the frightened patients.
Later, on the request of the hospital administration, the police arrived on the scene to control the situation. According to the hospital’s duty staff, an illegal structure was being constructed at the hospital premises by some people belonging to the ruling party, and when the EDO was getting it demolished, armed miscreants opened fire at the hospital.
It is pertinent to mention here that on July 6, Daheri had issued a letter to store owner Mehran Panhwar, in which he had approved the application for opening up the medical store at the CHM premises as ordered by the Sindh chief minister and Mirpurkhas administrator.
Arain told this scribe that he had received a written order of the Health EDO for constructing a new medical store in the premises of the hospital, but the EDO ordered demolition of the store late Friday night. Panhwar said that he had completed all formalities for the construction of a new medical store and had written permission of the chief minister, but the EDO ordered its demolition.
He said that the EDO had demanded a bribe of Rs 500,000 for constructing the store in the hospital premises, despite the orders of the Sindh chief minister and completing all legal formalities. When this scribe contacted Daheri to get his views on the issue, the EDO refused to issue any statement.
