‘Anti-music’ doctors held in Srinagar

In Indian Occupied Kashmir, police arrested three junior doctors of the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar for allegedly circulating pamphlets which asked the participants to stay away from a musical concert, marking its golden jubilee celebrations, while terming it as “un-Islamic”.
The police officials claimed that the doctors had been taken into preventive custody and would be freed after the celebrations were over. However, police sources told media men that the doctors had been booked under different section of the law on charges of preaching hatred and bigotry and trying to disrupt the celebrations of the prestigious institute, Kashmir Media Service reported.
The said doctors were seen in the college distributing pamphlets that dubbed music, dance and singing as immoral, cultural aggression, satanic culture and un-Islamic, said media reports quoting the officials. The pamphlets asked students and the faculty members as well as other invitees not to attend the music and dance programme held on Saturday. Witnesses said after the congregational Friday prayers held in the campus, a group of junior doctors started distributing these pamphlets titled ‘Golden Jubilee-Time to Introspect’.
After being informed by the GMC authorities, a police party from the nearby Karan Nagar Police Station arrived at the scene and took them into custody, they added. A local newspaper quoted some doctors as saying the swift action by the police was driven by the fear of embarrassment as the puppet Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, was the chief guest at the function. However, they termed it as uncalled for move.
