Pakistan Today

Two steps forward?

I was delighted to hear two pieces of good news at the beginning of this week. The first news was that the Election Commission of Pakistan has announced that those candidates who have dual nationalities will be ineligible to take part in elections and the second was that Secretary Election Commission, Ishtiaq Ahmed, informed the Supreme Court that 37 million unconfirmed names have been removed from the voters lists and 36 million new voters are being added in the electoral list according to the data of Nadra.

It is hoped that in the coming months, the ECP will announce that only those individuals will be allowed to take part in the elections who will announce their assets (which should be checked by a credible and independent institution by a transparent process) and also declare their taxes.
