The missing good governance

The PPP-led federal government has completed its three years by telling the people that by completing five years the democracy will be strengthened in the country.

Although the essence of the democratic government is the rule of law and accountability, the government has been giving preference to political expediency over good governance and accountability. The recent scam of the National Insurance Company Ltd (NICL) involves Moonis Elahi, son of former Chief Minister Punjab Pervaz Elahi who incidentally is the person who wanted to elect the former dictator General Pervez Muharraf a president in uniform as many times as the general wished.

The PML(Q) seems to have only one objective by joining the PPP-led government: to get Moonis Elahi cleared from any wrongdoing and fraud in the NICL. Why the government is not allowing Moonis Elahi to prove his innocence in the court of law?

Is it not true that the real estate business is lucrative and many ordinary Pakistani have benefited from it during the last 20 years? It is known to every thoughtful Pakistani that corrupt, incompetent, wealthy and influential people are supporting the politician to reach the corridors of power.

As there is no impartial accountability existing in the land of the pure, there is no viable check on the corruption and fraud. In civilised countries corruption is not acceptable and there is serve punishment for taking bribe. But in our land of the pure it is called “speedy money” or “welfare donation” and bureaucrats are hand in gloves with the politicians as the case of NICL is a glaring example.

In the case of NICL scam, the federal government is obstructing the investigation by an honest government officer Mr Zafar Qureshi.

The PML(Q) leaders have asked the PPP leaders to remove Zafar Qureshi if they want their alliance to remain intact. Is it not a political black mailing? Is it not true that our politicians are without any moral or ethics?

Is it not sufficient to prove that our politicians are in politics to enrich themselves only? Mr Amin Fahim, a sitting Commerce Minister, who is reported to have taken his share from the cake, has returned his share to the government. It seems that the government does not want the rule of law and honest government servants.
