Croatia’s anti-graft police arrested the commander of land forces General Miljenko Kruljac on Friday, pressing on with a campaign against corruption intended to meet criteria for European Union membership. “He was arrested this morning and the investigation is ongoing,” police spokeswoman Aleksandra Ljuba told Reuters.
State news agency Hina said Kruljac was suspected of illegal activities in selling or purchasing land. The ex-Yugoslav republic, which concluded EU membership talks last month and hopes to join the bloc in 2013, launched an extensive anti-corruption campaign after prime minister Ivo Sanader suddenly stepped down in July 2009.
