The PPP parliamentary party in the Punjab Assembly has formally demanded the party leadership to suspend the membership of former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi for violating party discipline.
The party also passed a resolution in the parliamentary meeting and demanded the central leadership to remove Qureshi from the party office.
The resolution was passed by the PPP’s parliamentary party in a meeting, chaired by Opposition Leader Raja Riaz, at the Punjab Assembly Secretariat’s cafeteria on Thursday.
PPP Parliamentary Leader Zulfiqar Gondal and Deputy Parliamentary Leader Shaukat Basra were also present in the meeting.
The meeting was called by Riaz on an urgent basis after getting confirmation that Qureshi had met with the PPP’s political opponent and strong critic, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif at his residence in Raiwind without taking the party into the confidence.
The meeting was informed that Qureshi had been regularly violating the party discipline suggesting that there was a need to take action against him, especially after his meetings with the PML-N leader.
Basra tabled a written resolution before the party members levelling charges of indiscipline against Qureshi that was unanimously passed.
In the resolution, the parliamentary party demanded President Asif Ali Zardari, who is also the PPP co-chairman, take disciplinary action against Qureshi for violating party discipline by meeting Nawaz without taking the party’s permission before it.
The resolution also directly demanded Zardari suspend Qureshi’s basic membership with his removal from the party office.
