Anti-terrorism policy along geo-strategic lines essential: PM

Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Thursday that formulating a comprehensive and enduring national policy and strategy on the war against terrorism in accordance with the geo-strategic environment was essential. Gilani told State Foreign Affairs Minister Hina Rabbani Khar at Prime Minister’s House that Pakistan was committed to working in unison with all its neighbours and international partners for the establishment of peace and elimination of terrorism.
He said Pakistan’s efforts in the political and military domain to combat terrorism needed recognition at the international level. He stressed that the sovereignty and self-respect of all the partners in the war against terrorism needed to be respected. The global resolve, he added, should manifest commitment in addressing the root causes that the terrorists and militants exploited. He said the socio-economic development of the underdeveloped regions and economic empowerment of the poor and vulnerable people had to be merged into a joint strategy against terrorism.
Gilani said the evil designs and motives of the terrorists and militants could only be foiled by close coordination and better understanding among all the partners. Earlier, Khar briefed the prime minister on progress on the strategic dialogue between Pakistan and the United States, as well as the situation arising from the border incursions and raids by Afghan militants on the border posts inside Pakistan. She apprised the prime minister of various diplomatic initiatives in the same context.
