All private embankments in Thatta will be removed to deal with the approaching flood, said Sindh Culture Minister Sassui Palijo while reviewing the progress of an operation against private bunds. Palijo was informed that 45 private embankments erected by influential landlords were removed during the operation and the remaining bunds would also be removed soon.
The minister ordered to take all possible measures for repairing the bunds and for other development works so they could be completed in time. It is pertinent to mention here that Palijo had held a meeting with the Thatta administration, and Revenue and Irrigation officials on June 27 to stress the need of removing the main irrigation hurdles from the district. She had stressed the need to repair the breaches at MS Kot Almoon and PB Bund; launching an operation against landlords; and ending water shortage in various canals of Sakro, Jaati, Shah Bunder, and Kharo Choon tehsils of Thatta district.
Palijo had directed the district coordination officer, and Irrigation and police officials to ensure water availability in the tail areas; lodging cases against those creating hurdles through cuts and blocking the water, and landlords or parties involved. She had said that a report on negligence would be sent to President Asif Ali Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah. It is also relevant to mention here that on the directives of Palijo, the Revenue and Irrigation officials succeeded in ensuring equitable water share in the tail areas of Mirpur Sakro through launching an operation against persons involved in cuts and diversions.
