Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Secretary Ishtiak Ahmed Khan said on Tuesday that all by-elections held in the absence of the Election Commission were legally protected.
“We conducted bye-elections in the light of the Constitution of Pakistan,” Khan told reporters after a press briefing with officials from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), Population Census Organisation (PCO) and other departments here at the ECP offices. He said under Article 26 of the constitution, the ECP was bound to conduct elections on any vacant seats within 60 days.
37 MILLION NAMES REMOVED:
To a question, Khan said 37 million names in the electoral list were found to be invalid and therefore removed after verification by the NADRA. He said 81 million voters had been registered in the electoral rolls of 2007.
