The population of Karachi will reach 25 million by the year 2020, said District Coordination Officer (DCO) Muhammad Hussain Syed on Tuesday.
While briefing Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah at a meeting on CDGK affairs, the DCO said that presently Karachi is the 12th largest and 6th most populated city in the world with 18 million people.
Regarding CDGK’s budget, Syed said that as per estimates, the total revenue for the year 2011-2012 stands at Rs 44.569 billion with expenditures of Rs 70.691 billion that include Rs 24.725 billion of CDGK; Rs 19.740 billion for SLTS; and Rs 9.058 billion for the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board.
He informed the participants that around 45 major development schemes have been approved for the year 2011-2012 pertaining to different sectors including health, education, social sectors, flyovers, roads, etc.
The CDGK was formed after the devolution of Local Government (LG) Department on August 14, 2001, and all local councils were dissolved on October 24, 2001. The CDGK comprises KMC, KDA and devolved LG Department, with 80,829 staff, with 27,098 belonging to defunct KMC, 4,708 of KDA and 52,032 of LG department.
