Declaring it a pro-public move, the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) on Monday welcomed the decision of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the federal cabinet to increase the gas supply quota to KESC. In a statement issued by the power utility, it was stated that the ECC decision would not only enable the KESC to reduce load shedding in Karachi but also ensure that industries and strategic consumers get 24-hour uninterrupted power supply.
Hoping that the decision will be implemented soon, the KESC added that load shedding duration in Karachi will be reduced by 50 percent as soon as the gas supply increases to at least 240 MMCFD. “We are grateful to Petroleum and Natural Resources Minister Dr Asim Hussain, who is sincerely putting his best efforts to resolve the long outstanding gas supply issue of KESC in the larger interest of the 20 million people of Karachi,” it was stated.
“Significantly enough, the implementation on this decision would reduce reliance on almost four times more expensive furnace oil and go a long way in bringing down the electricity tariff for Karachi consumers. The KESC was of the opinion that the decisions should be implemented as soon as possible so that the general public can get relief both in terms of fewer load shedding hours and reduced electricity tariff.
