19,550 cases pending before SC

Although the Supreme Court disposed off 1,781 cases during the month of June, 1,180 new ones were brought up before the court for adjudication. On the other hand, the total number of cases pending before the court currently stands at 19,550.
According to a press release, the backlog in the apex court on June 1 was 20,151 cases while 1,180 new ones were instituted during the month of June. The progressive total of pending cases as on June 30 comes to 21,331 out of which 1,781 were disposed of in the said month; therefore, the backlog on July 1 remained at 19,550.
At Islamabad, the principal seat, 490 cases were instituted while 519 cases were disposed of during the said period while 422 were instituted and 968 disposed of at the Lahore Registry.
In Karachi, 120 cases were instituted while judgments on 192 cases passed. The number of new and disposed of cases at the Karachi Registry stood at 133 and 102 respectively while 15 cases were added to the list in Quetta.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry constituted benches at the principal seat and the registries to expedite the case hearing and clear the backlog even during the court vacations.
Some cases of urgent nature like presidential reference for revisiting the death sentence of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Haj and NICL scams, and Safe City Project were also heard along with other regular cases.
The chief justice and other judges remained committed to accelerated the disposal of cases and further reduce the backlog. The judges continued to hear the cases in various benches with the aim to provide relief to the litigants.
