‘Corruption, sectarianism products of 1977 martial law’

The 5th of July 1977 martial law introduced the cultures of Kalashnikov, drugs, sectarianism and corruption in Pakistan and is the darkest day in the history of Pakistan as a dictator imposed martial law in the country on the behest of his foreign bosses, said Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Women Wing Sindh Information Secretary Sharmila Farooqi.
In a statement issued on Monday, she stated that the counter revolution of July 5, 1977 only strengthened the theocracy that created the law and order situation still being faced by the country.
She sought punishment for the perpetrators of the 1977 martial law, as the democratic government of an elected and popular prime minister was toppled in the darkness of the night.
“The democratic government of Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was toppled because he made the country an atomic power and made efforts to form an Islamic block.”
“The remnants of dictator Gen Zia once again have been engaged in hatching a conspiracy to overthrow the PPP-led democratic government in the name of grand opposition alliance but their nefarious designs against President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani would be foiled,” stated Farooqi, referring to the PML-N. She added that the PPP-led coalition government would complete its tenure and the followers of Zia should avoid dreaming of midterm elections.
The PPP leader said that democracy is flourishing in the country with the support of the incumbent leadership of the Pakistani military that has given several proofs of its loyalty with democracy and for the rule of law and supremacy of the parliament.
“No doubt the present leadership of the armed forces has been fully extending their cooperation to the democratic rulers of the country to strengthen democracy and to put the country on the track of economic progress and prosperity,” she said.
Farooqi said the Punjab chief minister’s recent visit to London should remain confined to his claim of attracting foreign investment, as it would be better if Shahbaz Sharif does not conspire to weaken the democracy. “All political parties would have to work on one agenda of supporting democracy if they were sincere with the country and the nation.”
