The lead investigator of the National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) scam, Zafar Qureshi, on Sunday held a meeting with Interior Minister Rehman Malik and shared his concerns vis-à-vis the progress made in investigation.
The Supreme Court Friday had earlier suspended the notification of Qureshi’s transfer to the National Police Foundation (NPF) and directed him to restart probe into the scam.
According to a source in the Ministry of Interior, Additional DG Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Qureshi expressed concern over the transfer of four officials who have been assisting him in the investigation. It is pertinent to recall that the transfer of Syed Javed Hussain Shah was transferred to Dera Ismail Khan, Muhammad Ahmad Chaudhry to Turbat, Khalid Anees to Peshawar and Chaudhry Sarwar to Gawadar were ordered on the very day the Supreme Court reinstated Qureshi as the head of the investigation team.
The source said the meeting was aimed at resolving the ‘difference of approach’ between the government and the FIA pertaining to the NICL scam. He said the additional DG FIA also briefed the minister on the corruption cases in the NPF. Meanwhile, Rehman Malik gave informal approval to the budget of the NPF for the financial year 2011-12 while chairing a high-level meeting held at the Ministry of Interior to discuss the affairs of the institution.
The NPF officials provided details of the budget to the interior minister while other administrative matters affairs also came under discussion. The interior secretary, MD NPF and top officials attended the meeting.
