Monsoon, taking an early start this year, is hampering mega development projects as the city’s roads flood up with rain water, making transportation of supplied difficult, Pakistan Today has learnt. The rains are becoming a nuisance for the residents of Garden Town as the roads dug up for replacement of sewage pipelines are yet to be remade, making the society seem a puddle of mud.
“It feels like we are powerless over the situation as no one seems to care”, said Akbar, a mechanic in Garden Town. On the other hand, the Kalma Chowk Project has also slowed down because of monsoon. The site mangers claim that the rain causes trouble in shifting and travelling as the roads are filled with water and mud makes it difficult for cranes to operate. One of the site managers said work like shifting girders from one point to another becomes difficult and dangerous.
“Cranes need solid bases to be operated on, in damp conditions it is usually advised not to use cranes to avoid hazards”, he added. The manager said the construction team was working hard to complete the flyover project before the deadline. “Yes, the rains have disturbed the project to an extent but we are still working day and night to finish off one side of the flyover before the inauguration date i.e August 14, as promised by the Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif,” he added.
