The Lahore High Court on Monday summoned Punjab home secretary and Lahore’s chief traffic officer (CTO) on July 11 on city trader’s petition against protests, processions and political rallies on The Mall. The business community says the political activities on the city’s main artery are ruining their businesses.
During the Monday’s hearing, LHC Chief Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry also directed the Punjab home secretary and the traffic DIG to apprise the court about their plan to check uncalled for political rallies and protests on The Mall.
A provincial law officer submitted before the court a summary sent to Punjab chief minister seeking his approval to stop political activities on the Mall Road. According to summery, the protesters, depending on their numbers, would be given alternative places like Nasir Bagh and Attique Stadium to hold demonstrations.
The CJ, however, while expressing dissatisfaction on the summary, summoned Punjab home secretary and chief traffic officer to appear before the court on July 11.
The court was hearing the petition filed by Mall Road Traders Association seeking an end to protests and rallies
on The Mall.
