A small bomb exploded in a supermarket in an outlying suburb of Shanghai on Monday, but caused only minor damage and no casualties, a government-run website reported. The incident happened at a supermarket in Shanghai’s northwestern Jiading district, which lies far from the commercial hub’s affluent and cosmopolitan downtown.
The supermarket received an anonymous telephone call in the early afternoon saying a bomb had been placed in a locker, the Shanghai government-run eastday.com website said. The bomb exploded after the building had been evacuated by police, damaging the locker but causing no casualties, it added. Police detained a suspect three hours later, who “candidly confessed to the crime”, the report said, adding that investigations were continuing. Bombings are rare in China, though disgruntled residents have set off explosions in buses and buildings in the past to complain about local grievances.
