The commission to probe the Abbottabad incident will be holding its maiden meeting today (Tuesday) with a mandate to probe the reasons of the presence of al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in a compound in Abbottabad. The first formal session of the commission, headed by Senior Supreme Court Justice Javed Iqbal, will be held at the Cabinet Division. Other members of the commission include IGP (r) Abbas Khan, former diplomat Ashraf Jahangir Qazi, Lt Gen (r) Nadeem Ahmed, while Cabinet Division Secretary Nargis Sethi is the secretary of the commission.
The commission will review the security deficiencies in the back drop of the unilateral attack by the US and compile recommendations to stop such incidents in the future. The first meeting of the commission was deferred on June 25 as Abbas Khan was out of the country. The four-member commission has been authorised to ascertain the full facts regarding the presence of Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan, investigate circumstances and facts regarding the US operation in Abbottabad on May 2, determine the nature, background and causes of lapses by the authorities concerned, if any and make consequential recommendations. The Ministry of Interior will provide secretarial support to the commission.
