Poor family on the run, fearing ‘Chaudhrys’

In the Chudhary Barkat Village in Sanghar district, a poor family, including women and children, is on the run after some influential persons associated with the Chaudhry brothers (village head) attacked their house, demanding their daughter’s hand.
They have been forced to migrate from their ancestral village as the culprits have tried to kidnap their daughter many times and even opened fire on the family.
Chudhary Arif Jatt and his wife Tahira Jatt along with other family members have taken refuge in the Umm-e-Hani town of Mirpurkhas city. They also observed a protest demonstration against the influential Chaudhry brothers on Thursday.
Arif told Pakistan Today that some months ago, he had engaged their daughter M with Zaman Jatt in the village but after some days, they learned that Zaman was a criminal and many FIRs had been registered against him and his brother. “We broke the engagement and married our daughter with our nephew Samiullah Jatt.”
After getting the information of M’s marriage with Samiullah, the accused Zaman along with his brothers Ali, Ashfaq, Ahsan and others attacked the family’s house and tried to kill their daughter and son-in-law, but fortunately they remained safe.
The alleged accused opened straight firing at the house and threatened the family of dire consequences if their daughter is not handed over.
Arif said that he had given an application to the Sanghar police and other high-ups of police for protection but no measures were taken. The family then migrated from Sanghar and came to Mirpurkhas, fearing that they might be killed.
The victim family requested the higher officials of judiciary and police to provide them protection from Zaman and his brothers.
