Film review: ‘Bheja Fry 2’

What can one expect from a film that’s called Bheja Fry? The idea behind making the film is to make a parody that not just makes fun of people but pokes at those who enjoy its viewership. And that’s what the second installment of Bheja Fry does, it pokes you and pricks you and while you smile through some, rest of the way you’re actually left wondering – why am I sitting through this drivel?
Bharat Bhushan (Vinay Pathak) returns for another misadventure, this time as a TV reality show contestant who ends up winning big money and a luxurious cruise. So on the cruise, he meets the high society and executives the misfit that he is, he manages to irk a few influential people. One of them being Ajit Talwar (Kay Kay Menon) who sees personally to the sending off of Bharat from the cruise liner.
The premise is certainly interesting and has room for some adventure. It comes too in the form of being marooned on an island. Naturally a comedy of errors happens on this little adventure, but all through, the single most dominant feature of the film is Pathak’s Bhushan. And his irksome stupidity is unavoidable. In his first film, Pathak plays his character in an ernest and edgy way, but so primitive is his lack of intelligence and social behavior that it annoys the living daylights out of not just the on-screen characters but the audience as well.
You have to bear the annoying cackle that is Bhushan’s laughter, his unstoppable ramble of inhuman logic and his brand of crass humour. It is an assault on your senses and it achieves what it sets out to do. Scramble your brains to numbness.
But what made the Bheja Fry novel was that it touched a range of human emotions. It spoke that even the most ludicrous person out there has feelings. Sadly, there is no such depth in Pathak’s character this time around. Instead his adventure this time is like an episode of The Benny Hill Show or A Carry On television series minus a fancy brit sense of humour.
