Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Thursday condemned the Minister of Defense’s statement that 3,000 youngsters from Swat and other parts of the country were under detention without legal recourse. Khan said findings of the Eisenhower Research Project, based at Brown University, has confirmed that denial of fundamental human rights including access to legal course has caused extensive violent response and terrorism against the civilian population caught between two opposing forces.
The PTI chairman appealed to the Supreme Court of Pakistan to take suo moto action against the defense minister and asked for details on the detained individuals. The PTI chairman stated that findings of the Eisenhower Research Project had vindicated PTI’s stance that the war on terror had only brought economic and social destruction. He said the report also destroys the myth that the US invasions led to democracies in the region with warlords continuing to hold power in Afghanistan.
He said another research conducted by Rand highlights that alternate approaches have been much more effective than military responses to counter terrorism. The study found that 40 percent of the 268 terror groups were eliminated through intelligence and policing methods, while 43 percent ended their violence as a result of peaceful political accommodation. Furthermore, 10 percent ceased their violent activity as they had achieved their objectives. A meager seven percent were defeated militarily.
