The issue of regular appointment of a new Vice Chancellor for the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore is hanging fire since several months. This university has one faculty dealing with purely veterinary sciences while four faculties are dealing with livestock production, business management, fisheries and biosciences. Since the inception of this university in 2002, two prolonged tenures have been held by the veterinarians.
It is about time that fresh blood dealing with some aspects of animal sciences, like animal husbandry, is introduced essentially from amongst career professors of UVAS. This would balance the development of faculties dealing with animal sciences since the veterinary faculty was already well developed when the Punjab Veterinary College was elevated to the status of a university. The livestock production field in rural areas needs essential assistance in the field of animal husbandry which is pivotal in alleviating rural poverty. The selectors would be well advised to keep the above stated facts in their mind during the selection of a new VC.
