HEC confers Best University Teacher Award 2010 on Dr Ruhi Khalid

Beaconhouse National University Institute of Psychology Director Professor Dr Ruhi Khalid has been selected by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan for the Best University Teacher Award for year 2010. The award consists of a certificate and a cash prize worth Rs 100,000.
The award will be conferred upon her in a commemorative award ceremony scheduled to be held on July 12, 2011 at the HEC Auditorium, Islamabad. Ruhi was the former professor and chairperson of the Department of Psychology and Applied Psychology, Punjab University, Lahore. She completed her PhD in Psychology from the University of Glasgow in 1985. Her PhD thesis was on self-esteem. As a Fulbright scholar, her Postdoctoral work was in the area of gender issues. She was a visiting fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States of America (USA) (1997-1998).
Her areas of interest are social, health, clinical and developmental psychology and women’s issues. She established the Higher Educational Link Programme under the Department for International Development (DFID) at the University College London’s sub-department of clinical and health psychology for a period of three years (2001-2004). She is also one of the HEC’s approved supervisors for PhD in Psychology.
As a qualified counsellor Ruhi has attended counselling workshops and courses at the University of Pittsburgh. She has undergone training in the following: therapeutic intervention for victims of violent crimes at the Centre for Victims of Violent Crimes, Pittsburgh, USA; training programme for qualified sexual assault counsellors in USA at the Women’s Centre and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh; certificate of Completion in Victim Assistance Training Programme, Allegheny and has attended counselling courses for abused women and for child abuse victims at the University of Pittsburgh. She has to her credit memberships of a number of prestigious academic/professional societies in Pakistan as well as in Britain and USA. She is an active researcher and has participated and organised various workshops, seminars and conferences within the country as well as in the UK, USA, Holland, Sweden, Italy and Malaysia. She is on the editorial board of number of scientific journals. Her research publications include books and research articles published in reputable national and international scientific journals.
