The government has urgently convened a meeting to force the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) to take rectifying measures to improve the supply of electricity and its services in the city of Karachi here on Wednesday. An official source said that the meeting would be chaired by the Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar in the absence of Finance Minister, who is on leave.
The Chief Executive of KESC and Managing Director of Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) Secretaries of Finance, Petroleum and Water and Power would be attending the meeting. The meeting is likely to direct KESC to improve its generation to end the load shedding in the industrial hub of the country.
KESC would be asked to make payments for the electricity supplied to it by PEPCO, the source said, adding that the demand of gas supplies for the company would also be taken up.
The source said that KESC had set up a 565 MW generation plant for which it was seeking gas allocation of 120 mcfd. However, the government is in no position to allocate gas for any power plant as it is facing a gas shortage of 1bcfd and has affected industrial output adversely.
