A married Hindu woman was burnt to death on Monday allegedly after being severely tortured in village Amarhar in the Khokhrapar police jurisdiction, some 40 kilometres away from Umerkot. The police have arrested the woman’s husband and father-in-law over suspicions of killing the woman. The brother of the deceased, Sarwan Meghwar, a resident of Gadhrio village, said his sister Moomal alias Mema had been married with Amolakh some six years ago.
“Her husband used to mistreat her and therefore she mostly stayed at her parents’ home. On Saturday, she was called at her husband’s village on the pretext that the money order of the Benazir Income Support Programme had arrived on her name and she had to come to receive it. When she arrived at the village, she was severely tortured by her in-laws and then was locked in the kitchen and set on fire in an unconscious state. Later, Khokhrapar police on the information of villagers took the husband of Moomal and her father-in-law Gordhan in custody.
