New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law a bill legalizing gay marriage, delivering a powerful victory for gay rights advocates in one of the most populous and influential states of the union. Gay rights activists chanted and danced in the streets of New York city early Saturday as news spread that the Republican-controlled state senate had narrowly approved the “Marriage Equality Act.” Cuomo signed the measure, which will take effect in 30 days, into law just before midnight Friday (0400 GMT). Cheers erupted in the senate galleries in the state capital Albany when the legislators voted 33-29 to approve the measure after weeks of intense wrangling. The 29 Democratic senators were joined by four Republicans, one more than the minimum needed to get the bill approved. Crowds of people gathered to hug, dance and cheer outside the Stonewall Inn, in Manhattan’s West Village, where riots broke out on June 28, 1969 after police raided the bar frequented by gay customers. The incident is seen as the birth of the modern gay rights movement.
I have the privilege to inform Journalists Community of Pakistan that in a groundbreaking achievement for upholding the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) has passed a resolution on human rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity (L9/Rev1) on 17th of June 2011. The resolution, presented by South Africa along with Brazil and 39 additional co-sponsors from all regions of the world, was passed by a vote of 23 in favor, 19 against, and 3 abstentions. Please the list of voting https://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1870/images…
The United States is joining human rights groups in hailing the passage of a resolution by the U.N. Human Rights Council rejecting abuses against people because of their sexual orientation. The resolution, presented by South Africa, won narrow approval by the council in Geneva.
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Association (South Asia) also highly be thankful for UN member's states to help in safeguarding the rights of community in this region also.
This Region is already over populated and growth rate is already touching more than 2.5 %, especially population growth in Pakistan is in-fact 3.5 % highest in Asian countries and the current 175 Million will be doubled in next 12 years only. The gay-marriage will tremendously decrease the population growth in Pakistan. This will also help to lift the economy and Pakistan like Scandinavian and Canada, where weddings create revenue of all sorts. States and local governments benefit from marriage licenses.
According to Asjad Imtiaz, working for gay and lesbian Rights in South-Asia, currently serving as Chief Engineering Advisor/Chairman Federal Flood Commission and also coordinator ILGA (International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA)- for South-Asia, Pakistan can raise up to 400 to 500 million UDS annually by imposing 1000 to 1500 dollars fee for Gay lesbian marriage.
Zero Corruption
Dowry is mother of corruption in South Asia;-Nevertheless, the biggest advantages of Gay marriage are ever increasing menace of dowry In South-Asia. Also known as Dahej in Hindi it is the payment in cash or some kind of gifts given to bridegroom's family along with the bride. This include cash, jewellery, electrical appliances, furniture, bedding, crockery, utensils and other household items that help the newly wed set up her home but in case gay lesbian marriage their will no burden on society and there will be no corruption.
Now Pakistan and Indian Government inline with UN resolutions on sexual orientation and gender identity (L9/Rev1) should allow gay-lesbian-marriage for the largest interest of this deprive community.
Journalists of Pakistan, instead of criticizing the historic event organized by US Embassy –Islamabad ought take lead and work for this noble cause to save Pakistan by population explosion and to avert economic crisis.
