Welcoming the Foreign Secretary level talks between India and Pakistan, chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said the two sides should hold dialogue at the Prime Ministerial level to resolve the Kashmir issue.
“Let both the countries fix a timeframe to resolve the Kashmir dispute. We have seen in the past that trivial incidents bring the dialogue process back to square one. There is a need to elevate the talks process from the current Foreign Ministerial level to Prime Ministerial level,” he said.
He called for time bound and sustained dialogue process. “If both the countries show sincerity and seriousness they can resolve the vexed Kashmir issue once for all. We are happy that they are discussing Kashmir today in a cordial atmosphere,” he added.
Mirwaiz said that Kashmir cannot be resolved within the ambit of Indian or Pakistani constitution. “If they want to find an out of box solution, then they need to take the Kashmiri leadership on board and discuss the possible ways. In the first phase they can have bilateral dialogue and they can involve Kashmiri leaders in the second phase,” he said.
However, Mirwaiz was quick to add that “continuous engagement” is the need of the hour. “Kashmir is a very complex issue and it cannot be resolved in a single meeting,” he said.
Mirwaiz while referring to his interaction with the German delegation said, “I told as the Berlin wall was demolished to unite East and West Germany we want Line of Control (LoC) to be erased to unite both Kashmiris.”
