Terming the prime minister’s announcement for withdrawal of facilities for labourers as part of the government’s anti-labour policies, Mirpurkhas Division Chairman of Pakistan WAPDA Hydroelectric central labour union (CBA) Akbar Khan Leghari on Thursday said the present government was established on slogan of ‘Roti, Kapra aur Makan’ but the government is instead implementing the slogan on their own selves while depriving the labours from their bread.
He expressed these views while speaking at a protest rally organised by the Pakistan WAPDA Hydroelectric central labour union outside the press club. “Under a 1974 agreement, facility of using fixed units of free-of-charge electricity was given to WAPDA employees and after 36 years this facility was being withdrawn but the move would not be tolerated to remove and the workers’ rights will be protected through every kind of sacrifice,” said Leghari, adding that the government’s act is against the manifesto and ideology of late PPP leaders Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto.
Several resolutions were passed at the protest rally, condemning the government’s announcement. The protesters also demanded the reinstatement of sacked KESC employees and condemned the removal of labours laws in the due course of the 18th constitutional amendment. They called for the government to restore labours laws immediately.
