Given the current volatile security situation in the country, the reformation and overhaul of the institution of police is a necessity, said a press release issued by Shehri-CBE. Shehri-CBE has also been holding various workshops and focus group discussions to mobilise public opinion for police reforms and bridge the trust deficit between the police and the different segments of the society, such as community representatives, renowned academic scholars, students, young professionals, members of civil society and the media.
The current year-long project titled ‘Police reforms in Pakistan with special emphasis on human rights training’ has entered into its final phase with an open court recently held in Karachi. The participants in this daylong event belonged to the civil society, police, lawyers, media and academia. Shehri-CBE General Secretary Amber Ali Bhai delivered the welcome note and introduced the organisation to the participants of the session. Shehri-CBE senior member Khatib Ahmed introduced the project, highlighting the organisation’s previous and current projects carried out with the police under the context of police reforms. Project Director Gulmina Bilal Ahmad explained the various challenges, which were present during the one-year project, how they were overcome and what major accomplishments were achieved.
These were followed by a session of open discussion based on the demands for police reforms. The various quarters present at the meeting gave their input and suggestions on the topic.
The event was concluded on a signature campaign where all participants showed their support and endorsed the proposed police reforms in the country.
