The Karachi Electric Supply Company’s (KESC) group head of Human Resources (HR), Aasir Manzoor, was hired in the company in disregard for proper rules as he lost his previous job in a bank on charges of fraud. It is because of Manzoor’s subsequent appointments – familial ones at that – that a wedge was initially drawn between the company’s management and its workers, Pakistan Today has learnt.
“Aasir Manzoor used to work as HR manager in Saudi Pak Commercial Bank and arrived at the KESC with a felony record,” sources told Pakistan Today. “He had applied for home loan and managed to get Rs 6 million, but when the audit documents submitted by him were verified, they proved to be fake. A case of bank fraud was registered against him, and after a formal inquiry, he was dismissed from service. This happened some four years ago. According to the rules concerned, he cannot be appointed in any private company or government department because he was proved guilty and should be deemed a convict person.”
Sources said that after Manzoor assumed charge as HR chief, he first appointed his father-in-law Chaudhry Gafoor as manger in the HR Department. He also hired his brother-in-law Zarrar Nasir Khan as manger and promoted him twice – Khan now works as general manager in the HR Department. Manzoor also appointed his niece, Ms Humna, as HR manager while his nephew Yasir was hired in the KESC as electric manger. Yasir has a degree in textile engineering from Faisalabad but he has been appointed on a pure technical post, one that necessitates someone with a background and training in electric technology.
“These family members of Manzoor have created misunderstandings between the management and workers, and the crisis today is because of the confusion in the HR Department created by them,” sources said.
