Hizb ut-Tahrir (Party of Liberation) is an international banned organisation, which believes in pan-Islamism with a goal to unify all Muslim countries under caliphate to govern by Islamic law. Since its inception in 1953 at Jerusalem by Taqiuddin al-Nabhani, the organisation has spread to more than 40 countries, with a special focus on the Arab world and the West.
Hizb ut-Tahrir calls for jihad against the West while claiming that it exploits Muslims around the world. It also renounces democracy describing it as an un-Islamic. According to the Hizb ut-Tahrir’s manifesto for Pakistan, it is working for establishing caliphate in the country as an obligation given in sharia. It is feared that the outlawed outfit enjoys sympathy within the society and has penetrated into state apparatus so as to forward its agenda.
Furthermore, it is said that a vast majority of the sympathisers comes from middle and upper middle educated classes, given it an edge to publicise its agenda through digital modes of communication like internet. In a message, available at internet, to the Pakistani armed forces, Hizb ut-Tahrir asked them to topple the government and work for setting up caliphate, as they had the strength and the resources to achieve the aim.
