Christians protest against privatisation of SWM

The Maseeha Millat Party (MMP) staged a protest in front of the Lahore Press Club on Wednesday against the privatisation of Solid Waste Management (SWM) and the failure of the government to regularise the SWM contractual staff as recommended by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Shareef. The protest was led by MMP President Aslam Pervaiz Sehtora and was attended by SWM workers, representatives of the Pakistan Human Liberation Commission and civil society members. The protestors, carrying a model of cross and banners, held a sit-in on the road.
Addressing the protestors, Aslam said the SWM workers provided a neat and clean atmosphere to the citizens by removing polluted items from all over the city. He said that because of a continued contact with harmful wastes, many workers became victims of hepatitis, tuberculoses, asthma and kidney diseases and even lost their lives. The government however showed no concern for them, added Aslam.
Later, Pakistan People’s Party Minority Wing President Pervaiz Seruya, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Minority Wing Senior Vice President Jacson Gill and Qaumi Maseeha Party Chairman Bishop Dr M M Waqas also addressed the protestors.
