WAPDA employees held a protest on Tuesday against the government’s decision of withdrawing free units.
WAPDA Employees Peegham Union led the protest. Employees left their work for sometime and joined the protest held at the WAPDA House. Protesters were holding banners inscribed with slogans against the government for withdrawing free units of WAPDA employees. The employees also chanted slogans against the government for not curtailing its expenditures and withdrawing their free units.
Union Chairman Yousaf Malik, President Khawaja Zahoor Ahmed and Secretary General Ikhlaq Khan also participated in the protest. They said that the president and prime minister are spending lavishly and least bothered about the people’s problem. Protesters said that axing free units of poor employees is an injustice, as the amount of these units is very petty compared to lavish spending of the cabinet. The WAPDA employees said that protests would continue on a daily basis until the government scraps the decision. They said that only a few thousand rupees would be saved by this futile exercise.
“We only get 100 to 200 free units per month and it is not a luxury but our need,” said one of the protestors adding that in every government department, there are some perks and privileges for employees and it is our right to have some free units. It is being expected that the proposed withdrawal of free electricity would be highly resisted by around 0.1 million employees of WAPDA.
A PEPCO official said that all employees were using only 0.4 percent of the total consumed units of electricity across the country. Every department pays bills of its employees and there are an average 175 free units for each employee, he added. The official said that there are some misconceptions that employees are enjoying free units.
I AM THE LOWER DIVISIONAL CLERK OF WAPDA. I THOUGHT THIS ACT OF GOVT. IS SERIOUS BECAUSE THIS IS THE FIRST STEP TO KILLED THE EMPLOYEES. THE WAPDA HYDRO ELECTRIC UNION IS THE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE AND THE LEADER OF UNION EARNED MONEY AND BE SILENT ON THE MOST VALUABLE ISSUE OF EMPLOYEES BENEFIT. FIRST I THINK THE GOVT. CONTROL THE CORRUPTION. UNION IS FAILED TO DEFEND US. IN THE CRITICAL SITUATION OF CLERICAL STAFF NOT ANY RELIEF BECAUSE NO ALLOWANCES OF CLERICAL STAFF INSTEAD OF HOUSE RENT AND MEDICAL ALLOWANCE WHICH IS VERY DISAPPOINTED FOR US. THE UNION JUST DEFEND THE MAJORITY. PLEASE WE NEED UR CO-OPERATION, GOD HELPS U.
The very first excellent step of the present government, to put a bann on enjoying free electricity of wapda employees. Well done Prime Minister. Now an alternate system for the checking of electric meters of wapda employees should be established. Because wapda employees will rescue one another in the theft of electricity in the absence of such a system. In this regard some other department may be given responsibilities of checking the wapda employees electric meters.
it is great step of government because they are misusing this facility. they not only use more then 500 or more units and sale the electricity. they make their homes as mini bijli ghar. yes some other department should guard the meters of wapda employee. why wapda employee get this facility. otherwise every government employee should have this facility
