Rafi Peer Theatre Workshop and Alliance Francaise de Lahore celebrated the World Music Day at the Rafi Peer Cultural Center on Tuesday.
The celebration intended to provide a comprehensive representation of Pakistan’s musical identity. Different forms of music including sufi, folk, qawwali, rock, and trance drumming were played at the event.
The programme started with a Dholi performance followed by ghazals. Hussain Bakhsh Gullu and his sons namely Chaand and Suraj sang pieces of classical poetry. Coke Studio fame Sain Zahur played sufi music at the event, while Mian Mir sang qawwalis. An upcoming band by the name of Takatak also performed at the celebration.
The programme, organised by the Rafi Peer group, was well-attended. The audience majorly comprised youth, interested in the music culture of Pakistan. The event continued for about four hours and was a big success.
Looking at the overwhelming response of the audience, the organisers said the group was intending to make World Music Day celebrations a permanent part of its event calendar.
June 21, celebrated as World Music Day, was originally known as the Fête de la Musique since it began in France. The idea behind the World Music Day is to promote music.
