The Punjab government has given a green signal to the police to crack down on the vehicles carrying fake MPA or MNA number plates.
The orders have been issued to stop terror groups using these tactics to camouflage their identity and cross the police barriers without showing their identity. The Faisalabad police authorities have been asked to collect data of the cars being genuinely used by MPAs and MNAs of the district. The authorities have declared that a severe action will be taken against those using the privileged number plates without a good reason.
It is relevant to note that each parliamentarian has obtained up to 20 MPA or MNA number plates which are gifted to close friends and relatives to create a false impression of their status. Such plates or considered as a status symbol among the privileged class as they guarantee entrance and parking in the most sensitive areas and traffic wardens often do not check them to avoid any trouble.
The legislators have been informed that the police are authorised to impound such vehicles under the use of their friends and relatives because it is a potential threat to law and order and public security.
Meanwhile, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Sardar Asif Khan has strictly advised the traffic wardens to ban the entry of tractor-trailers driving without reflectors on the backside in the city areas after 10pm. The move is being taken to avoid accidents due to poor visibility of these vehicles without reflectors at night. The CTO has also directed the traffic officials to fine the cars having fancy number plates in contravention of the rules.
