In another incident involving highhandedness from the Pakistan Rangers personnel, the Qasim Rangers authorities have called back troops and leave the control of Nara Canal. With the extrajudicial killing of Sarfaraz Shah in Karachi already earning a bad name for the soldiers, the issue of Rangers baton charging and injuring six farmers during their protest against water shortage in Jhuddo three days ago has forced the Rangers to call back their personnel from the command area. Mirpurkhas Nara Canal Director confirmed that Rangers have gone back to barracks.
It is worth mentioning that six vehicles along with around 30 troops of Qasim Rangers were posted in the command area of Nara canal as well as Jamaro east and west, Thar canal and Mithrao canal.
Nara Canal Director Ghulam Mustufa Ujjan told Pakistan Today that Rangers were called back by the order of their higher authorities after the issue of Jhuddo growers protest being injured got media coverage.
However, he was of the view that with the withdrawal of Rangers personnel from the Nara Canal, complaints of water stealing will rise and the law and order situation will get worse, as “influential landlords will create a law and order situation for water stealing.” He also said that he had written a letter to the Sindh government through his department against the deployment of Ranger in the command area of Nara Canal.
