Seventh-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci and former top-10 Aussie Jelena Dokic will be the combatants in Saturday’s women’s final at the $220,000 Unicef Open.
World’s No 30 Vinci upset fifth-seeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova 7-5, 6-1, while the 59th-ranked Dokic was leading Italian qualifier Romina Oprandi 6-4, 2-0 when Oprandi retired during their semifinal encounter on the grass courts at Autotron Rosmalen.
Cibulkova was also forced to complete her quarter-final match here on Friday, which she did with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 upset of second-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova. Cibulkova was leading the two-time Grand Slam champion 3-0 in the third set. here on Thursday when play was suspended because of rain and darkness.
The 28-year-old Vinci is 4-1 in her career finals, including a title in Barcelona this year, while the 28-year-old Dokic, who was born in the former Yugoslavian is 6-7 in her career WTA finals, including a title in the Kuala Lumpur back in March. That championship marked her first one on the circuit in nine years.
