The federal cabinet approved on Wednesday the draft of the 20th Constitutional Amendment Bill 2011 to provide legal cover to the newly-formed Election Commission of Pakistan, completed in accordance with the orders of the Supreme Court to formulate the commission in light of the 18th Amendment.
The meeting held here with Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in the chair decided to reconsider and revisit the proposal on commercial import of non-prohibited bore arms and ammunition in consultation with all stakeholders. A source told Pakistan Today that the cabinet members argued against this proposal, saying that law and order was already precarious and import of non-prohibited bore arms and ammunition could further jeopardise the security situation.
The source said Information Minister Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan briefed the prime minister and cabinet members on the sit-in staged by journalists outside Parliament House. She also told the meeting that PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif had pounced on the opportunity to embarrass the government by addressing the protesting journalists, which was a rare occurrence since journalist bodies were headed by pro-Pakistan People’s Party journalists.
