The government on Tuesday removed Sindh Rangers Director General Maj General Aijaz Chaudhry and Sindh Inspector General (IG) Fayaz Leghari from their posts in line with Supreme Court orders in a suo moto case against the brutal murder of a youngster in Karachi by Rangers personnel.
A notice was issued here by the Establishment Division on the removal of the top police official, whereas the announcement that the Rangers DG had been posted out was made by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) in a brief press statement. The government has yet to decide who would succeed the two officers. An ISPR official told Pakistan Today that no decision had been taken to appoint a new officer as the new Rangers DG and it would take some time to make the decision.
However, Interior Ministry sources said Islamabad IG Wajid Ali Durrani could be the next Sindh IG. The two top officers were removed after the apex court decided they could have influenced the investigation into the murder. The Karachi police chief has been given additional charge of Sindh inspector general for now.
