Five people, including two activists of the Awami National Party (ANP), were killed in Orangi Town of Karachi on Tuesday as violence rages unabated in the country’s financial capital. The death toll in the latest wave of target killings has topped 11 in the last 48 hours. Per reports, Orangi Town wore a deserted look on Tuesday as residents preferred to say inside following the killings.
Shops and markets in the area remained closed for the day, as a clash between Pakhtun and Urdu-speaking population of the area paralysed routine life. Four people, two activists of ANP were among those killed on Tuesday in Peerabad police station precincts, while another man was gunned down by unidentified armed men in Orangi police station precincts separately.
The two ANP activists were apparently shot dead by unidentified sharp shooters in Qasba Colony, Orangi Town Sector 11-L. Peerabad SHO said the victims were identified as Muhammad Waheed and Abrar. ANP spokesman Qadir Khan told Pakistan Today that the two activists were killed when some unidentified armed men attacked the ANP’s Muslimabad Unit. Later, a hotel owner was killed by unidentified armed men in Muslimabad. The SHO identified the victim as Noor Malik.
A man injured in a firing incident near Kati Pahari also succumbed to his injuries at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Peerabad police SHO said Asghar was injured when he caught between a gun battle between two groups the previous day. Separately, Orangi Town police claimed to have recovered a hand-cuffed, bullet-riddled body of a 25-year-old man near Ibrahim Ali Bhai School in Orangi No 1. Officials said the identity of the victim could not be ascertained as yet.
Orangi Town Police Officer (TPO) Khurram Waris told Pakistan Today that the situation in the town was worsening each passing day. He confirmed that five people had been killed in firing incidents in Qasba Colony and Orangi Town No 1. Separately, a man was shot dead and another injured in firing by unidentified armed men near Water Pump.
Yousuf Plaza police SHO said 26-year-old Mukhtar had been killed while Naveed, 26, had been injured.
