Four people were killed and another 11 injured in a clash between MQM and ANP workers in Orangi Town on Monday. The entry and exit points of the town were closed after firing in various parts of the town was heard. The worst-hit areas were Qasba Colony, Kali Pahari, Bukhari Colony and Muslimabad. According to reports, of the four, two people were gunned down as a result of firing in Aligarh, whereas the other two were shot dead by unidentified men at the Monday weekly bazaar.
The victims were identified as Abdul Ghafoor and Adeel. The body of Adeel was taken to the Sindh Government Qatar Hospital (SGQH), whereas Ghafoor’s body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH). The other two, killed in firing by unidentified men were identified as Akbar, and Shafique Qureshi. Police said Qureshi was an MQM activist associated with Unit 133, whereas Akbar was linked to the Muttahida Organising Committee. Contrary to reports, Orangi Town Police Officer Khurram Waris said only seven people had been injured and no one was killed as a result of firing. He said the injured were taken to ASH and SGQH and confirmed that the entry and exit points of the town were closed.
Waris said the deployment of police and Rangers personnel had been beefed up. The condition of an injured man, who was identified as Alamgir, was said to be critical. Separately, violence spread to adjoining parts of the town as a man was killed by firing of unidentified armed persons in North Nazimabad. Officials at the Sir Syed police station said a 40-year-old man was shot dead in the firing. They said the deceased was identified as Zia Alam.
In yet another incident of violence, a 45-year-old man was killed and another injured by firing of unidentified armed men near Rehmania Masjid, Hussainabad. Officials at the Azizabad police station said motorcyclists resorted to firing at a real estate shop near the MJA School and killed Rizwan. They said a passer-by, who was identified as Ilyas, was also injured in the incident.
