Federal Environment Minister Samina Khalid Ghurki said on Tuesday that global warming and climatic change had become a reality and that Pakistan among the developing countries was the most vulnerable country. She expressed these views during a meeting of environment officials from the Economic Cooperation Organisation (ECO) member states with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran.
According to a press statement issued here, the minister further said the increasing global warming and rapid change in climate were the most pressing problems which were directly affecting the environment.
She said the environment had become the most important topic and, globally, it was on the top of every country’s agenda. Highlighting the environmental issues of Pakistan, the federal minister said the floods of the last year were an ample proof of the extreme climatic conditions caused by the global warming and had exposed Pakistan’s vulnerability to it.
“Pakistan is fully committed to its international obligations for protecting the earth and its fragile atmosphere, so all of us should contribute to the betterment of the environment because whatever we do leaves a positive impact on our environment,” she added.
Earlier, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, while talking to the environmental officials of the ECO member states, showed his concern over the global environmental degradation which, he said, was primarily due to over-exploitation of resources by the developed countries.
