A military court in Rawalpindi has completed its proceedings against 11 persons said to be involved in the General Headquarters (GHQ) attack in 2009 and the decision can come any time on it. A field general court martial headed by an army brigadier continued with the proceedings in the GHQ assault case for five months at an undisclosed location in Rawalpindi, according to reliable sources.
They said the lawyers of the accused were given ample time to defend their clients during the case that was run under the court martial. Under the military law, those held responsible for an attack on a defence installation or its espionage could be awarded death sentence.
It was on October 10, 2009, that around 10 armed people carried out an attack on the GHQ. They were carrying hand grenades and other weapons. However, during the retaliation by the military personnel nine assailants were killed and one Aqeel alias Dr Usman was injured and arrested. Eleven army personnel were also killed in the action. Those who have been tried in a military court are charged with abetting Aqeel in the attack on the GHQ.
One Imran among the accused is said to have retired from the army’s medical corps like Aqeel. The other accused include Khaliqur Rehman, Usman Aka, Wajid Mehmood, Muhammad Adnan and Tahir Shafiq.
